Refuse Collection
There are three days that refuse is collected. All refuse must be set out for collection by 7:00 a.m. on your particular day.
  • Monday - Area includes, north of 24 hwy. To Norledge Ave., West of Sterling to City Limits
  • Tuesday - Area includes, north of 24 Hwy. To Felton St. & Hackett St., east of Sterling & Felton to City Limits
  • Wednesday - Area including, north of Scarritt St. To City limits, Sterling Ave. & Scarritt St., east to City Limits, including areas along and east of M-291 hwy.
A few rules of thumb to remember, containers cannot be over 65 LB., no yardwaste is allowed to be mixed with refuse. Place containers in a location that can be easily seen from the street. Place broken glass and sharp objects in a separate container that is marked appropriately.

Bulky Item Pick-up
In the months of April, July, and October the Public Works Department will conduct a bulky item pick-up.

These are items that are too large to fit into the refuse packer. Items must be placed along the curb, no sooner than the Saturday before the Bulky item pick-up.

Yardwaste Collection
The city collects your yardwaste starting in April and then throughout the Spring and Summer months. Collection day is on Thursday. Place your yardwaste out at the curb before 7:00 a.m.

Limbs and brush must be cut to no longer than 4 feet in length and bundled with twine or rope. Grass clippings can be put into a container weighing less than 65 lbs. or in kraft bags, weighing less than 65 lbs. No plastic bags containing yardwaste will be picked up. And absolutely no household waste can be mixed with the yardwaste.

Landfill Permits
As a resident or land owner in Sugar Creek, you can obtain 12 permits each year to use the Courtney Ridge Landfill at no cost. Here are the criteria for obtaining a permit:
  • All materials for the landfill must be from the Sugar Creek address where you reside, or the property located in Sugar Creek.
  • City utilities must be current and up to date.
  • You must bring your paid receipt as proof of payment.
There are certain items that are prohibited from the landfill. Please contact Public Works for a complete list.

Household Hazardous Waste
The City of Sugar Creek helps you dispose of your household hazardous waste through the Mid-America Regional Council Solid Waste Management District.

The disposal facility is located in Kansas City at 4707 Deramus (off Chouteau Trafficway), and does require you to make an appointment. After making your appointment, come by the Public Works building to obtain a permit. There is no additional charge for this service.

Hazardous wastes are caustic, corrosive, flammable, reactive and toxic products. Labels on hazardous products contain the signal words: Poison, Danger, Warning or Caution

These products include:
  • Automotive and household batteries
  • Acid and Alkalis
  • Fluorescent tube
  • Herbicides and pesticides
  • Used oil and automotive fluids
  • Household cleaner (e.g. drain, toilet and oven cleaners)
  • Paint and paint related products
  • Fuels (e.g. kerosene and gasoline)
  • Solvents (e.g. naphtha, cresol and turpentine)
  • Hobby supplies
  • Pool chemicals

Recycling Collection
Sugar Creek's recycling program is another example of our city's progressive approach to city services. The city picks up your recyclable items on the same day that your refuse is collected. Acceptable items include:
  • Newspaper
  • HDPE plastic
  • PETE plastic
  • Tin cans
  • Aluminum cans
  • Magazines
There is no need to separate the items. Just set out your bin by 7:00 a.m., next to your refuse container. A separate city vehicle collects the recycling materials.
